What is it?
Smog forms when a chemical reaction between oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) occure in the atmosphere during warm months. These chemicals are dangerous because they produce a haze that can be harmful to humans, plants and animals exposed over long periods of time. In humans, they cause choking, coughing, difficulty breathing, asthma, reduced resistance to lung infections and colds, and eye irritaion. But it doesnt only affect humans. Smog also has an effect on the environment, as it inhibits plant growth and can cause widespread damage to crops and forests.
In big cities or urban areas, more than half of the smog is caused by cars, buses, trucks, and boats. But smog isn't always constant- there are good days, and bad days. Smog occurances are linked to the following:
